Dr. Savita Rani Saxena – A Custodian of Kumaoni Heritage

Born in the lap of the Himalayas in Haldwani (Nainital), Uttarakhand, Dr. Savita Rani Saxena brings with her a legacy deeply rooted in the rich cultural and spiritual traditions of the Kumaon region. With a career spanning 36 years in teaching and administration under the Higher Education Department, Government of Uttar Pradesh, and having served as the Principal of G.G.P.G. College, Ghazipur, Dr. Saxena blends academic excellence with artistic heritage.

The Essence of Aipan – Her Artistic Soul

Growing up surrounded by nature and Kumaon’s unique cultural richness, Dr. Saxena found her muse in Aipan—a sacred folk art form that adorns households during every auspicious ritual and celebration in Uttarakhand. Her Aipan creations are not just decorative but deeply spiritual expressions drawn with ‘geru’ (red ochre) and ‘biswar’ (rice paste), as well as modern interpretations in maroon and white acrylics.

These designs aren’t merely patterns; they are spiritual mandalas, each narrating the story of devotion, heritage, and womanhood. From Chauki and Peeth to the sacred Shri Yantra and Surya Chauki, every line she draws reflects a prayer, every symbol holds a legacy passed down through generations.

Cultural Significance & Lineage

The Aipan tradition she continues was once an integral part of every ritual—marriages, mundan (head-shaving), thread ceremonies (janeu), ear-piercing (karnchedan), and more. Historically practiced during the Chand Dynasty, Aipan was preserved primarily by Brahmin and Sah communities, while royal families like the Mehras, Fadtyals, Rautelas, and Rajwads upheld other dimensions of cultural governance.

Through her meticulous hands, Dr. Saxena reintroduces us to iconic designs like:

  • Mahalaxmi Pujan Chauki

  • Shri Yantra Devi Chauki

  • Nata, Ghunvan, Dhuli Arghary Chauki

  • Harshayani & Bodhini Chauki

These are not just visuals—they are living traditions, reimagined through her devotion and artistic discipline.
